The Flavour Academy organized a workshop dedicated to a diabetic diet. The participants of the workshop had the opportunity to find out more about the key facts on diabetes, try out the exercise programme recommended to diabetics and jointly prepare a meal based on tips for diabetics.
The workshop was attended by food bloggers (also those directly affected by diabetes), as well as by the editors of the culture and food magazine “Kukbuk”. The dietician Agnieszka Piskała, Sokołów's nutrition expert, explained the key facts about diabetes and how a diabetic diet plan should be set up. A diabetic diet requires regular meal times and frequency; in most of the cases it consists of five meals a day (sometimes of six). Dinner and the so-called second dinner are of key importance – they are prerequisites for maintaining constant blood sugar levels throughout the night. The diabetic meal plan is based on complex carbohydrates. However, meat and cold cuts are also important elements of the diabetic diet. They are low glycemic index (GI) foods, and additionally, they lower the GI of meals based on groats and pasta, with added fruit or vegetables. They are also an important source of proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Physical activity is key in the prevention of diabetes and for those already suffering from diabetes. Another item discussed at the workshop was the workout recommended to diabetics, which was presented by the coach Adam Besztak. The participants were asked to do some resistance exercises, a brief Nordic walking training and breathing exercises.
It was time to do the cooking after the exercises – under the watchful eye of Dominik Moskalenko, the staff of the “Kukbuk” magazine and the bloggers prepared beef tartare and beef Stroganoff. Finally, the participants of the workshop had a meal together and discussed a healthy and balanced diet which improves the quality of the entire life.
